Champaign County Animal Welfare League

The Champaign County Animal Welfare League  (CCAWL) was formed in 2015, after the passing of David Robert Wetzell. Mr. Wetzell’s wish was for his remaining estate to be used to create an organization that focuses on the well-being and care of the neglected, unwanted, and abandoned animals of Champaign County, Ohio. His wish was to have a large-scale facility that not only rescued animals of all types, but also provided services to the animals of the community, including a pet cemetery, a training and rehabilitation facility, and a low-cost clinic.

After finding the appropriate location, a 72-acre farm outside of Mechanicsburg, we diligently began to work on bringing Mr. Wetzell’s vision to life.

Barely Used Pets

Barely used pets is not your typical shelter or rescue home. Our environment offers a free-roaming society where the dogs are not kenneled all day but can roam and run freely within a confined, fenced area. Our residents can walk inside and outside as weather permits. All of our dogs are socialized and assessed daily.
