Keeping your dog looking and feeling their best doesn’t just happen at the groomer—it starts at home, too!

Regular grooming appointments are essential, but what you do between visits can make a huge difference in your dog’s comfort, coat condition, and overall health.

Here are 5 simple things every dog owner should be doing at home to keep their pup in great shape between grooms:

✂️ 1. Brush Regularly (More Than You Think!)

Brushing isn’t just about looks—it prevents painful mats and tangles that can lead to skin issues.

  • Long-haired and doodle coats: daily to every other day
  • Medium coats: 2–3 times per week
  • Short coats: weekly

👉 Mats can form quickly, especially in areas like behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar.

🐾 2. Keep Nails Trimmed

Overgrown nails can cause discomfort, affect how your dog walks, and even lead to joint issues over time.

  • Aim to trim every 3–4 weeks
  • If you hear clicking on the floor—it’s time!

⚠️ Nail trimming can be tricky if you’re not used to it, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.

👂 3. Check and Clean Ears

Dirty ears can lead to infections if left unchecked.

  • Look for redness, odor, or buildup
  • Gently clean with a dog-safe ear cleaner when needed

🐶 Dogs with floppy ears or swimmers especially need regular checks!

🛁 4. Spot Clean (Skip Over-Bathing)

Bathing too often can dry out your dog’s skin—but spot cleaning is your best friend.

  • Clean paws, faces, and “messy areas” as needed
  • Use gentle, dog-safe products

✨ This helps keep your dog fresh without stripping natural oils.

🧼 5. Stay on a Grooming Schedule

Even with great at-home care, professional grooming is still essential.

Regular appointments help with:

  • Proper coat maintenance
  • Safe trimming and styling
  • Early detection of skin or health issues

👉 Staying on schedule prevents bigger (and more expensive) problems later!
